Rio was one of those pleasant surprises that really came out of nowhere and lit the box office on fire, relatively speaking. Naturally, any time a film, especially an animated film, finds box office success they rush right into a sequel.
The original film was a fun "bird out of water" tale in which a domesticated bird suddenly finds himself in the "wilds" of Rio de Janeiro under the guise of propagating his species. Well, the natural extension of the film was for perhaps for Blu, Jewel and the kids to remain in the sanctuary or return to Minnesota.
But it seems that despite being called Rio 2, most of the film will take place elsewhere in South America. Instead, it seems that the film will follow the tried and true path of Meet the Parents when the end up deep in the Amazon and run into Jewel's dad.
Regardless, the film looks just interesting enough to pique our curiosity. Rio 2 hits theaters on April 14, 2014, almost three years to the day that the original debuted in theaters.
